Types of Distance Learning Courses

Online Courses

Charter Oak has developed courses that are conducted in an electronic environment. Participation in these courses requires a computer and a connection to the Internet. Most include online discussions of course content which take the place of on-ground classroom discussions. The CTDLC hosts Charter Oak's distance learning courses. The computer requirements can be found under "Blackboard" at http://www.ctdlc.org/Help/requirements.html.

Online courses come in several term lengths:

  • Full semester (15 weeks)
  • Accelerated (8 weeks) - available as the first or second term within a semester
  • Session courses (5 weeks) - includes many of the certificate courses in Public Safety and Computer Security.

Video-based Courses

Charter Oak offers video-based courses that are essentially videotape presentations supported by text. The only equipment you need to participate in these independent study courses is a VCR (and a telephone if you need to contact your instructor). Some video-based courses have a computer component, and it may be beneficial to have a computer to communicate with your instructor.
