History
Charter Oak is a distance learning college established in 1973 to assist adult learners in completing their college degree. Due to student demand, in 1998, the College began offering courses online. Today we offer more than 150 video and online courses – more than any other public college in the state. Courses can be taken for personal development or to earn credits that can be applied toward a degree or professional certificate.
Accreditations
Charter Oak is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Connecticut State Board for Higher Education. See our Accreditation page for more information.
Tuition and Payment Options
A Charter Oak education is very affordable. See how we compare to other Connecticut and online colleges in our Cost Comparison Chart:
The actual cost of a degree varies based on your individual circumstances. Please visit the Tuition page for more information. In addition, Charter Oak offers a variety of payment options including interest-free payment plans, scholarships, grants, and loans. For more information, please see Financial Aid.
Programs of Study
The College offers four General Studies Degrees - Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees (requiring a minimum of 60 credits), and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees (requiring at least 120 credits). Every degree awarded at Charter Oak is customized based on the student’s educational background and goals. There are also professional Certificate Programs (in Project Management, Computer Security, and Public Safety Administration), and more than 150 video and online courses.
Specialty Courses / Programs
Charter Oak develops new courses and programs based on the needs of our students and workforce demands, including the Connecticut Director’s Credential, the After School Education Credential, the Pharmacist Refresher Course, the RN Refresher Course, and the Home Care Nursing Course.
Transferring and Earning Credits
A major Charter Oak advantage is the many ways that credits can be combined to form a degree. In addition to taking video and online courses with the College, students may also utilize credits from:
- Courses transferred from other regionally accredited colleges and universities
- Standardized tests (CLEP, DANTES)
- Corporate & agency training programs evaluated by the ACE / PONSI
- Military service schools and occupational ratings evaluated by ACE
- Faculty-evaluated licensures / certifications
- Contract learning (independent study)
- Portfolio assessment (experiential learning)
- Connecticut Credit Assessment Program (CCAP)
Student Body
Approximately 2,000 students are enrolled (matriculated) with the College, representing all 50 states and 9 countries.
Graduates
Close to 50% of recent Charter Oak graduates have gone on to graduate school. In addition, 45% of graduates report professional advancement as a result of their Charter Oak degree. See Student Successes for more details.
Faculty
The Consulting Faculty is appointed from public and independent institutions of higher education in Connecticut. They ensure that every individual degree awarded by the College meets the highest academic standards. In addition, our video and online courses are taught by degreed-professionals who are experts in their fields.
Associations
Charter Oak State College has partnered with many branches of the US Military so that service members and their spouses can complete their degrees from a distance at a reduced rate. We also maintain a corporate partnership with Aetna Inc., and welcome new affiliations with corporations seeking to enhance their workforce through distance education.
Location
Our administrative offices are located in New Britain, Connecticut. However, since we are a distance learning college, students can take video or online courses, communicate with counselors, faculty and staff, and complete their degree without ever physically visiting our building.
