Programs of Study and Degree Requirements

Degree Offerings

Charter Oak State College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration and Health Information Management as well as the following degrees in General Studies: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science.

The distinction between a degree in "Arts" and a degree in "Science" is the number of Liberal Arts and Sciences credits required. Liberal Arts and Sciences include subjects within the areas of humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences. Subjects not included in the category of Liberal Arts and Sciences are those of a technical, professional, or occupationally-oriented nature. In other words, subjects involving the application of knowledge to particular activities such as business, technology, health care, social services and teaching are not considered Liberal Arts. A candidate who meets the requirements for a degree in "Arts" has the option of receiving the degree in "Science" instead.

Associate Degrees

General Studies

A General Studies Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree requires a minimum of 60 credits. For the degrees of Associate in Arts at least 45 of the credits must be in the Liberal Arts and Sciences; for the degrees of Associate in Science at least 30 of the credits must be in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate degree students must also meet the general education requirement.The major is printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

Associate in Arts and Associate in Science

  1. General Education: minimum of 20 cr
  2. Electives added to General Education to bring total credits to 60.

Bachelor Degrees

General Studies Major

Charter Oak State College offers Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in General Studies. The degree earned is either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science with a major in General Studies and a concentration in one or more specific subjects. The major and concentration are printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree requires 120 credits. For the Bachelor of Arts at least 90 credits must be in the liberal arts; 60 in the Bachelor of Science. Thirty (30) credits must be upper level.

      Bachelor of Arts

  1. General Education: minimum of 40 cr
  2. Concentration: minimum of 36 cr
  3. Electives added to General Education and Concentration to bring total credits to 120. (A minimum of 90 of the credits must be liberal arts subjects.)

      Bachelor of Science

  1. General Education: 40 cr
  2. Concentration: minimum of 36 cr
  3. Electives added to General Education and Concentration to bring total credits to 120. (A minimum of 60 of the credits must be in liberal arts subjects.)

Health Care Administration Major

Charter Oak State College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration. The major is printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration requires 120  credits. Thirty (30) credits must be upper level; 60 credits must be liberal arts; and 40 must meet the general education requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration

  1. General Education: minimum of 40 cr
  2. Major: 36 cr (42 cr including corequisites)
  3. Electives and prerequisites added to General Education and Major requirements bring total credits to 120.

 

Health Information Management Major

Charter Oak State College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management. The major is printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management requires 121 credits. Thirty (30) credits must be upper level; 60 credits must be liberal arts; and 40 must meet the general education requirements.

Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management

  1. General Education: minimum of 40 cr
  2. Major: 76 cr (82 cr including corequisites)
  3. Electives and prerequisites added to General Education and Major requirements bring total credits to 121.
