BUS 120: Business Law

Course Description

This course will focus on the aspects of law which affect businesses. It covers fundamental elements of the legal system, and uses professional negligence as the vehicle for demonstrating the system of judicial precedent. Other topics include the essentials of establishing and performing simple contracts and the remedies available in the event of a breach, the essential characteristics of the various forms of business relationships, and the nature of property, instruments and devices. (3 credits)

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Explain the manner in which behavior within society is regulated by the civil and the criminal law.
  2. Identify and explain the sources of law.
  3. Explain and illustrate the operation of the doctrine of precedent by reference to the essential elements of the tort of negligence, by which we mean duty, breach and damage/loss/injury.
  4. Explain the application of the tort of negligence to professional advisers.
  5. Identify business and agency relationships.
  6. Explain labor and employment legislation.
  7. Explain the essential characteristics of negotiable instruments and risk bearing devises.
  8. Identify and explain the four corners (requirements) of a contract.
