IDS 102: Prior Learning Portfolio Development

Course Description

This course focuses on the principles and methodology of assessing college level learning acquired outside the traditional classroom. Students analyze personal learning in terms of adult learning theory. They identify, articulate, and document personal learning outcomes and relate what they have learned to the topics and learning outcomes  college courses. The course promotes skill development in organizing information, writing, analyzing, and critical thinking. Students prepare a prior learning portfolio to demonstrate learning equivalent to one course which may be submitted for assessment at no additional charge within 30 days of successfully completing the IDS 102 course. A grade of “C” or better in this course is required for anyone seeking portfolio credit.  (3 credits)

Prerequisite

  • ENG 101: English Composition 1

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between learning experiences and learning outcomes.
  2. Analyze their personal learning experiences in terms of adult learning theory and in relation to college courses.
  3. Identify and document their personal learning outcomes.
  4. Examine topics and learning outcomes of college courses in relation to their personal learning outcomes.
  5. Identify college courses  that potentially match their personal learning outcomes.
  6. Prepare a prior learning portfolio to demonstrate that their personal learning is equivalent to what would be achieved by successfully completing a specified credit-bearing course taught at a regionally accredited higher education institution.
