Long Term Care Certificate for Direct Care Workers-Specialty Skills in Elder Care

The certificate for Direct Care Workers - Specialty Skills in Elder Care is designed to enhance clinical skills of direct care providers in long term care facilities, including front line workers, receptionists, and recreation facilitators. It targets specialty areas in elder care and gives an overview of health care systems and administration. It also provides an avenue for health care providers to move into supervisory positions and/or to further their education towards advanced degrees.

This certificate is 12 credits, 6 of which must be completed at Charter Oak and all courses must be completed with a grade of 'C' or better.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete a Certificate for Direct Care Workers - Specialty Skills in Elder Care should be able to:

1. explain the bio-psychosocial disease process of addiction and critically compare it to the moral model of addiction;
2. describe the roles and responsibilities of the members of the rehabilitation team;
3. discuss mental health issues problems associated with an aging society; and
4. analyze and describe the healthcare organization and operation.

Grades of C or higher must be earned in each certificate course.
