English
The English concentration provides a broad understanding of literature and cultivates skills in critical and creative writing. Students may choose one of two options within the English concentration: Literature or Creative Writing.
Concentration Requirements:
Option 1: Literature
The Literature option provides a broad background in British and American literature, some exposure to non-Western and diverse literatures, and training in the critical skill of reading, interpretation, and analysis.

The Creative Writing option combines the above areas with technical mastery of various writing genres.

Student Learning Outcomes
Students who graduate with a concentration in English with a focus in Literature, will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of literary history and traditions in British, America, and world literature;
- explain the foundational elements of literary analysis, such as plot, setting, character, point of view, theme, and cultural expectations;
- explain traditional literary genres such as poetry, drama, fiction, and prose essays;
- demonstrate and understanding of literary criticism.
Students who graduate with a concentration in English with a focus in Creative Writing, will be able to:
- identify and demonstrate knowledge of various techniques of creative writing;
- produce creative stories, poems, plays, or essays in the form, style, grammar, length, and writing level appropriate for the literary context.
