Undergraduate Associate Degree Programs

Charter Oak State College offers majors under the Associate in Science and Associate in Arts degrees (General Studies only).

Early Childhood Education Major:

Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education:

  • General Education requirements . Students enrolled in this degree will complete a subset of the Gen Ed program to include: Written Comm 1, Written Comm 2, Oral Comm, Arts & Humanities, Quantitative Reasoning, Digital Literacy, Information Literacy (as IDS 101), and either Scientific Reasoning OR Scientific Knowledge/Understanding.
  • Early Childhood Education major courses added to General Education bring the total to 60 credits.  
  • Additional Program Requirements:  The following additional components  are required for students to graduate with the AS in Early Childhood Education:
    • 100 pre-practicum field experience hours.
    • 200 practicum field experience hours in an NAEYC accredited center or other approved classroom.
    • 6 Key Assessments that are included as course assignments.  A final grade of 'C' must be earned for the student to pass each of the  key assessments. 
  • Students in the Early Childhood Education Associates Degree program also qualify to earn the Office of Early Childhood Teaching Credential at the level A (CT resident's only).

General Studies Major:

A General Studies Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree requires a minimum of 60 total credits. For the degrees of Associate in Arts at least 45 of the credits must be in the Liberal Arts and Sciences; for the degrees of Associate in Science at least 30 of the credits must be in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associate degree students must also meet the general education requirements. The major is printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

Associate in Arts and Associate in Science in General Studies:

Paraprofessional Studies Major:

An Associate of Science major in Paraprofessional Studies requires 60 credits. Thirty (30) credits must be liberal arts and the general education requirements must be met. The major is printed on the official transcript, but not the diploma.

Associate in Science in Paraprofessional Studies:

  • General Education requirements . Students enrolled in this degree will complete a subset of the Gen Ed program to include: Written Comm 1, Written Comm 2, Oral Comm, Arts & Humanities, Quantitative Reasoning, Digital Literacy, Information Literacy (as IDS 101), and either Scientific Reasoning OR Scientific Knowledge/Understanding.
  • Paraprofessional Studies major courses added to General Education bring the total to 60 credits. Students should note that due to the nature of online education, courses may require videotaping to fulfill requirements where student evaluations must be completed by a course instructor.
  • Additional Program Requirements:  The following additional components  are required for students to graduate with the AS in Paraprofessional Studies:
    • 100 hour practicum in an approved school or program.
