Testing Programs
Credits earned through certain exams in the following test programs can be used to fulfill Charter Oak State College undergraduate degree requirements:
- Advanced Placement Examinations (AP)
- Charter Oak State College Examinations
- College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- *Excelsior College Examination Program (UEXCEL)
- New York University Language Exam (NYU)
- Thomas Edison Credit-by-Examination Program (TECEP)
- United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI)/Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DSST) Examination Programs

Before registering for an exam, review the specific testing organization's website to ensure no updates have been made.

Advanced Placement Examinations (AP)
Undergraduate degree candidates who took AP tests while in high school may receive credit by requesting that the College Board send an official transcript to Charter Oak State College.
Charter Oak State College Examination
Undergraduate proficiency examinations have been developed by Charter Oak State College to enable individuals to validate knowledge in business statistics and child studies. The tests are two hours in length and multiple choice in format.
College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
CLEP is a testing program of the College Board offering two types of examinations: the general examinations and the subject examinations.
CLEP Test Administration
Most CLEP examinations are 90 minutes in length and are administered at the Charter Oak State College office in Newington. CLEP U.S. test centers and international test centers are available from CLEP, P.O. Box 6600, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6601, or by calling 1-800-257-9558. CLEP retains scores from ten (10)- twenty (20) years.
CLEP examinations are administered to military personnel on active duty in the United States Armed Forces through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES).
Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DSST)
The DSST exams were formerly known as Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES). DSST tests are college-level achievement tests developed by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Many of these exams can be used to meet Charter Oak State College degree requirements in the liberal arts and in non-liberal arts subjects. DSST examinations are administered by Charter Oak State College and nationwide by other colleges and universities.
Excelsior College Examination Program
These examinations are available in the fields of business, education, nursing and the arts and sciences. Credit varies according to the scope and level of the subject matter.
Excelsior College examinations are no longer offered. Students who have taken Excelsior sponsored exams and did not indicate Charter Oak State College as a score recipeint will need to have an official transcript forwarded to Charter Oak State College.
General Examinations
The CLEP general examinations may be used to meet undergraduate degree requirements. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive measure of knowledge in the Arts and Sciences.
New York University Language Exams
New York University School of Continuing Studies offers many foreign language exams. Charter Oak State College will award 12 lower level undergraduate credits for the NYU 12-point examination and 12 lower and 4 upper for the 16-point examination.
Subject Examinations
The CLEP subject examinations are proficiency tests corresponding to widely offered undergraduate college courses in such fields as history, natural sciences, government, literature, economics, business law, human growth and development, and algebra. Some cover materials studied in a one-semester course, while others include materials studied in a typical full-year course. Values range from 3 to 6 credits and are at the lower level.

The testing programs most readily available to undergraduate enrollees of Charter Oak State College are presented in the table on the following pages.
As tests are reviewed, the score and credit values may change. Enrolled students should check for changes in the list of exams or in Update, the College newsletter.
Some comprehensive and general exams yield credit in more than one subject and may duplicate credits from specific subject exams.
Scores for discontinued examinations may be submitted to the College for evaluation.
Thomas Edison Credit-by-Examination Program (TECEP)
Charter Oak State College undergraduate matriculated students may take Thomas Edison State University Exams for credit toward their degree. The exams are developed by faculty recruited by Thomas Edison State University Office of Test Development. Examinations are usually 2-3 hours in length and can be any combination of objective, essay or short answer formats.
