SOC 101: Sociology

Course Description

This course will focus on the basic concepts in Sociology and an analysis of culture, socialization, stratification, social organization, class, social interaction, social change, and conflict. (3 credits)

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain three sociological paradigms, and apply them to understand particular social issues and problems.
  2. Define important sociological concepts, explain important sociological theories, and describe sociological research method.
  3. Discuss the impact of social inequalities within society based on race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sex, and sexuality.
  4. Analyze population dynamics, education, health and healthcare issues, and aging issues as related to both the United States and other global societies presented in this course.
  5. Synthesize the local and global nature and impacts of social circumstances.
  6. Describe how current issues are shaped by social conditions and social structure.
  7. Critically examine theoretical perspectives and be able to apply them to current issues.
