ECE 274: Assessment Strategies for ECE Documentation and Observation for Teaching System (DOTS)

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the Office of Early Childhood (OEC) assessment tool available for use in ECE programs in CT. Students will learn about the Documentation for Observation and Teaching System (DOTS) and how to use it to support child development and learning. Students will learn about the guiding principles, the role of observation and assessment in the cycle of intentional teaching, and the structure of the tool in planning for observation and assessment of young children. (1 credit)

  3. Apply ethical, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive assessment practices when collecting and interpreting data. [Standards 3c, 6b]
  4. Demonstrate strategies for building reciprocal partnerships with families in the assessment process. [Standards 2b, 3d]
  5. Use professional communication skills to present CT DOTS data and engage families in meaningful ways. [Standards 6c, 6e]
  6. Reflect on professional growth and practice while using CT DOTS and aligning it with NAEYC’s foundational documents. [Standards 6d, 6e]
