EDU 513: Standards-Based Instruction and Assessment

Course Description

This course will focus on the knowledge and skills essential for designing and implementing standards-based instruction and assessment in the PreK-12 classroom. Students will analyze the principles and research behind standards-based learning. With an emphasis on alignment between academic standards, effective instruction, and targeted assessment, the course will guide students through the development of comprehensive curriculum units that promote equitable learning. The interpretation and use of assessment data to inform instructional decisions will be highlighted. Through practical applications and reflective practice, this asynchronous online course will support current and future educators’ abilities to create inclusive, standards-driven learning environments where data and feedback drive continuous improvement and student achievement. (3 credits)

  • EDU 501: Integrated Foundations of American Education
  • EDU 503: Curriculum Design Models

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  1. Defend the use of standards-based instruction and assessment in professional practice by constructing arguments grounded in educational theory and empirical evidence.
  2. Critique current standards-based instructional models by evaluating their effectiveness in promoting equitable student achievement.
  3. Design comprehensive curriculum units that support diverse learners by aligning academic standards, effective instruction, and targeted formative and summative assessment.
  4. Create authentic performance-based learning and assessment tasks that incorporate well-founded rubrics and feedback mechanisms.
  5. Analyze student assessment data to identify trends, gaps, and implications for instructional improvement within a standards-based framework.
  6. Synthesize research and best practices to develop innovative strategies for implementing standards-based grading and reporting systems.
