HIM 221: Advanced CPT Coding

Course Description

This course will focus on intermediate to advanced principles and application of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and HCPCS Level II coding systems. Students will code more complex procedures using case studies along with real or simulated patient records. Procedural groupings (APC, RUGs) will be explored as well as RBRVS. Students will examine professional fee billing examples related to coding and apply it to real-world scenarios. A focus on Evaluation and Management services and coding in ambulatory surgical centers will be included. (3 credits)

Prerequisite

  • HIM 211: Clinical Classification Systems II

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply policies, regulations, and standards to the management of information. (I.2, 3)
  2. Identify policies and strategies to achieve data integrity. (I.3, 3)
  3. Explain the use of classification systems, clinical vocabularies, and nomenclatures. (I.5, 2)
  4. Determine diagnosis and procedure codes and groupings according to official guidelines. (IV.1, 5)
  5. Evaluate revenue cycle processes. (IV.2, 5)
  6. Evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies (IV.3, 5)
