Course Description
The General Assembly established the Legislative Internship Program in 1969 to acquaint students with both the formal and informal aspects of the legislative process. The program offers Connecticut college students the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge about how state government works, through direct experience in the legislative offices. While serving within the Connecticut General Assembly, interns gain exclusive insight and access to legislators, aides, lobbyists, advocacy groups and the policy making process. Student successfully completing this course will earn 6 college credits. (6 credits)
Prerequisite
- ENG 101: English Composition 1
- ENG 102: English Composition 2
- Permission of Charter Oak State College Legislative Liaison
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Understand the state legislative process and major milestones
- Conduct entry-level legislative work such as constituent correspondence and analysis of legislative bills.
- Demonstrate the ability collaborate with various state government stakeholders such as legislators, staff, constituents, and outside groups.

Assignments:
- Weekly Discussions (Weeks 1-15) - By Friday of each week, provide a 200-250 word weekly reflection of your internship experience. Describe what you completed and what you have learned through the tasks.
- Weekly Timesheet and Activity Summary (Weeks 2-14) - Keep a weekly track of the days you participated in the CGA LIP Program. Bullet point tasks completed. See template below. Submit tracking sheet at the end of Week 14. See Table Below.
- Supervisor Evaluation (Week 15) - Using the evaluation template proved in the Blackboard course, have your supervisor conduct an analysis of your performance.
- Meeting & Presentation w/ Legislative Liaison (Week 15) - Your instructor is the legislative liaison. Schedule a 30-minute meeting and give a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation highlighting your experience, lessons learned, and how this will impact your future career and/or personal goals.
