Honoring a Vision of Lifelong Learning
The Habits of Mind Endowed Scholarship was established in 2026 by Robert J. Addy, alumnus, class of 1983, as a testament to his enduring belief in the power of education and his commitment to helping motivated individuals build a strong foundation of knowledge for lifelong success. The scholarship reflects Mr. Addy's conviction that academic achievement is only the beginning of a continuous learning journey.
Inspired by Addy's belief that “learning is habitual,” the scholarship recognizes that education is a lifelong pursuit. The concept of habits of the mind reflects the ability to apply knowledge, experience, critical thinking, and continuous learning to achieve success in both professional and personal endeavors.
Addy’s distinguished career includes service in the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine program, leadership roles in the nuclear power industry, senior leadership with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), and later consulting work focused on organizational effectiveness across the utility sector.
The endowed scholarship supports undergraduate students who demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and a clear vision for how they will apply their education to achieve meaningful career and life goals.

The Habits of Mind Endowed Scholarship may be awarded to incoming or currently enrolled undergraduate students who:

The Legacy of Learning
Established through a $25,000 endowed gift from Robert J. Addy, the Habits of Mind Endowed Scholarship creates a lasting legacy of educational opportunity at Charter Oak State College. An additional gift was provided to fund an immediate scholarship award in honor of President Ed Klonoski, further demonstrating Mr. Addy's commitment to student success and the College community.
Through this scholarship, future generations of Charter Oak students will be encouraged to embrace learning as a lifelong pursuit, apply their knowledge with purpose, and develop the habits of mind that lead to personal achievement and service to others.
