Credential Evaluation Program

  • Do you have a professional license, certification, or credential?
  • Was it issued by a governmental agency or professional organization?
  • Did you take a proctored exam to earn it?
  • Do you think the credentialing process may verify college-level learning?
  • Is information publicly available about the content verified by the exam and credentialing process?
  • Does your degree plan have room for the subject area and division level of that learning?

If you answered "yes" to the above questions, then consider pursuing credit for your credential.

Charter Oak students may request a credit review of a professional license, certification, or credential they earned within the past five years.

  • Review the policy information on Credit for Prior Learning (PLA) in the Sources of Credit section of the Official Catalog
  • Read the Credential Evaluation Program Manual in the PLA section of Student Self Service on the Acorn student portal.
  • Consult with your academic counselor, advisor, or program director regarding the potential applicability of any credential credit to your degree plan.
  • Download the necessary form(s) from the PLA section of Student Self Service on the Acorn student portal.
  • Submit your completed form(s) to the PLA or Registrar's Office.
  • Pay the assessment fee; consult with your advisor regarding the PLA Scholarship.
  • Monitor your Charter Oak email.

Your professional experience may cover a wider range of knowledge than the credential verifies.

  • Consult with your academic counselor, advisor, or program director regarding your best approach to apply for PLA credit and how it may apply to your degree plan.
  • If you wish to pursue credit for broader learning or a particular course, consider Testing and/or the Portfolio Program.
  • You may only request credit for a credential issued or valid during the effective dates for a matching credit recommendation made by Charter Oak.
  • You will need to use the Credit Registry service, and pay the associated fees, for a transcript.
