Course Descriptions

CHE 101: Chemistry with Lab (4 credits, lower division level)
Introductory course covering general chemistry. Cannot be used toward Chemistry concentration.
Equivalent to CHE 101: Chemistry with Lab at Charter Oak State College.

ENG 101: English Composition I (3 credits, lower division level)
Introductory writing course emphasizing the relationship between reading and writing. 
Equivalent to ENG 101: English Composition I at Charter Oak State College.

MAT 101: Contemporary Mathematics (3 credits, lower division level)
Mathematics course for the liberal arts curriculum focusing on the application of mathematics to today’s world.  Topics include street networks, producing and describing data, number and bar codes, weighted voting and apportionment, social choices and linear programming applications.
Equivalent to MAT 101: Contemporary Mathematics at Charter Oak State College.

MGT 101: Principles of Management (3 credits, lower division level)
Management course focused on the disciplines within the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Equivalent to MGT 101: Principles of Management at Charter Oak State College.

Environmental Regulations (3 credits, lower division level)
• Legal, regulatory and policy framework overseeing the water and wastewater industries
• Stakeholders involved in actions involving water and wastewater utilities
• History of environmental laws, regulations and policies
• Risk assessment process and potential impacts of pollutants on water and wastewater utilities.
• Main provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act including main federal and state grants and loans programs available
• CT DPH and CT DEEP Water resource programs impacting water and wastewater utilities in Connecticut
• Clean Air Act and Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Materials Laws and Regulations
• State of Connecticut and federal regulatory programs addressing solid waste disposal, recycling, and E-waste.
• Use of recycled water for potable and other purposes as well as the role of laboratories within water and wastewater utilities
• Relationship between state and federal laws and regulations
• New environmental laws and regulations on the horizon for water and wastewater utilities

Microbiology with Lab (4 credits, lower division level)
• Characteristics of microorganisms, emphasizing host-parasite relationships
• Details of morphology and physiology
• Control of epidemiological problems with emphasis on human and animal pathogens

Oral Communications (3 credits, lower division level)
• Ability to communicate verbally to staff
• Oral presentations to groups
• Conduct meetings
• Conduct training sessions
• Communicate with other agencies to coordinate emergency response

Special Topics in Water Treatment (3 credits, lower division level)
• State and federal water quality standards
• Approved state and federal techniques for water quality sample collection, preservation, and storage
• Chain-Of-Custody requirements for sample taking and handling
• Approved state and federal protocols for physical, chemical, and microbiological analytical techniques; Mathematics associated with approved state and federal analytical protocols
• Relationship between analyses, unit process control and quality of treated water in the distribution system
• Preparation of water treatment chemicals; Mathematics associated with preparation of water treatment chemicals.
