Computer Skills for the Workplace (3 credits, lower division level)
This course is designed to provide the fundamental computer competencies you need to survive and prosper in today’s fast-changing workplace. Students will learn how to implement the powers of modern office software to work faster and more efficiently. Students will learn how to send messages using e-mail; use Word to create, save and edit documents; use a spreadsheet; add and edit data in a database; understand the implications of file sizes, memory limitations, and network arrangements; and recognize the functions and features of modern computer components. Employment Skills and Externship (2 credits, lower division level)
Basic job search methods, creating effective resumes and cover letters, interview techniques and overcoming possible obstacles will be explored during classroom sessions. The externship is a critical component for the student to gain hands-on experience in a physician's office or clinic.
Introduction to Medical Administrative Assisting (2 credits, lower division level)
Medical Administrative Assistants play a key role in the daily operations in physician offices, clinics and various healthcare settings. Topics that are focused on in this course include: the profession, the history of medicine, the healthcare team and healthcare settings. Students will also learn about the complexities of therapeutic communication and gain an awareness of the legal and ethical ramifications of working in a healthcare setting.
Medical Administrative Procedures (2 credits, lower division level)
This course provides the student with a fundamental overview of the administrative duties in a medical office. Computers in the health care setting, telecommunications, patient scheduling, medical records management, written communications, and electronic health records will be emphasized. Students will engage in activities that allow them to use their critical thinking skills in order to gain knowledge in the decision making process when confronted with a series of situations. Digital and simulation software will be utilized in a computer lab setting to practice key administrative tasks.
Medical Billing and Coding (2 credits, lower division level)
In this course students will learn how to find medical codes for any disease, condition, treatment, or surgical procedure. Gaining an understanding of how medical coding works, students will learn the different codes to describe every aspect of a patient’s visit and how to report that information to an insurance company. By the end of this course, you will know how to find your way through both the CPT and the ICD-9 manuals. The transition of ICD-9 to ICD-10 will be covered. Anatomy and physiology is incorporated into this course by focusing on the function and structure of the human body through an understanding of basic chemistry, the human cell and the anatomy of the body's organ systems and the jobs that they do.
Medical Office Finances (2 credits, lower division level)
Mastering facility finances such as having an understanding of how to manage medical office insurance, billing and collections, coding, and accounting practices will be covered.
Survey of Medical Terminology (2 credits, lower division level)
This course teaches medical terminology from an anatomical approach. Root terms are divided by each body system. The origin, a combined form, and an example of non-medical everyday usage are provided for each root term. Word Associations are provided as a learning tool. Unusual and interesting information is provided in regards to each term. Root terms are combined with prefixes and suffixes as your learning will culminate in the interpretation of several paragraphs of medical notes. (Ed2Go Course)
